~ ~ Muktinath and the Himalayan Flame of Faith ~ ~

Jompsom Prayer WheelLet us take you up, onto the edge of the Tibetan plateau where you follow a trade route as ancient as time itself. Let us take you into alpine cool to a spot so sacred it is a place of pilgrimage from the dawn of time.

High up in the Himalayas is Muktinath where a flickering magical flame burns forever and the path to it is through an exciting mountain trail where the views are as exhilarating as the mountain air.

Meet a people who are hospitable in their simplicity and trust. Walk the walk of pilgrims and traders and expeditions. Venture into Hindu Nepal through landscapes created by eons and come within climbing distance of the high, white, challenging Himalayas.

A little rough, romantic even religious, this trek explores the faith you carry in you and the olden faith around you.

This program includes a full tented camp and all transportation food, and staff: a professional, English-speaking guide and Sherpas, cook and kitchen crew, trekking permits, park fees and taxes; Hotel, breakfasts, and sightseeing in Kathmandu. A Teahouse Option is available.

  • Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu, meet & greet, hotel check-in Briefing and Q&A
  • Day 2: In Kathmandu. Unjetlag and sightseeing while we complete paperwork and trek preparations.
  • Day 3: Morning sightseeing in Kathmandu. Fly to Pokhara in the afternoon and overnight there.
  • Day 4: Early flight to Jomsom, horse/pony hire, on to Kagbeni. This old fortified monastery-town is much more interesting than Jomsom, and not noticeably higher.
  • Day 5: Climb halfway to Muktinath and stop at one of the small towns or perhaps at Eklai Batti (the Solitary Teahouse). Great views to the west, and amazing landscapes - a visual cross between the Tibetan Plateau, the American Southwest, and Nepal.
  • Day 6: Make Muktinath easily by lunch, and spend the afternoon exploring the fascinating temple complex.
  • Day 7: Visit the temples again in the morning, then downhill all day to Jomsom. Overnight there.
  • Day 8: Trek to Thukche, a prosperous village of Thakali traders. Lunch in Marpha, a pretty town built almost pueblo-like into a hillside. The distillery here makes potent fruit liquors a bit like applejack or eau-de-vie.
  • Day 9: Trek to Lete. The broad plain of the Kali Gandaki narrows here, and you'll climb out of the riverbed to Lete, above the gorge.
  • Day 10: A spectacular day, high above the river. Morning through forests, then an afternoon with open views and waterfalls (smaller in this dry season than in monsoon, when they thunder down). Stop in Dana.
  • Day 11: Trek to Tatopani ("Hot Water"), named for the natural hot springs by the riverside.
  • Day 12: An easy day of flat walking along the river. Overnight at Bega Khola.
  • Day 13: Trek to Beni, a large town that is the next destination of the road in progress from Pokhara.
  • Day 14: You'll pick up the road and a vehicle during the morning. Drive to Pokhara and fly back to Kathmandu.
  • Day 15: In Kathmandu. Morning sightseeing, afternoon free.
  • Day 16: Depart Kathmandu. Airport transportation and assistance, of course.
